CrunchPad

CrunchPad

So, Michael Arrington and crew are building a 12" touch device that basically runs a browser and that is about it. Rumor is that final price will be around $200. Anyway I am wondering what everyone thinks about it.

Some background info can be found here:

Personally, I am not sure if I would use it or not. I mean it's cool but only a browser. The web apps that I think would benefit from this kind of thing is places like Netvibes (personalized start pages). Overall a cool gadget, just not sure it's something I would use in the end.

I'm sure it runs a flavor of Linux, and unless TechCrunch locks it down, it won't be long before you'll be able to run all your favorite apps.

Yeah that is true. Let's hope they are smart about it and let coders do what they want to it.

Yeah, it would totally suck if a company forced you to buy a computer with their OS, use their development tools, use limit you to one language and framework. What kind of company would produce a hardware product like that?

I would have to agree with you all here. When someone restricts coders, it always sucks. You should be able to do whatever you want with what you buy, no?

Well, if the price is around $300 or so, you can almost cough up the extra $50 or so for a 10-12" small computer. Other than that is looks pretty dang neat to me.

The difference between the CrunchPad and say a check netbook is going to be the touch screen. And the computer you get for $350 is going to be hard to use, typing wise. We currently have a couple at HyperQuake and the keyboard is so very tiny.

True that. The keyboards are unbelievably tiny. My only point was from a programming standpoint, you could be a whole computer with an OS for almost the same price. The touch screen is kind of neat, none-the-less.
