Silverlight 2.0 Public Beta and IE8 Developer Beta

Posted in:

Today at Mix08 Microsoft made some big announcements; the one that we are most interested in is the release of Silverlight 2.0 Public Beta. This is a very exciting time to be web developer, especially if your focus is heading towards RIAs (Rich Internet Applications). We have talked recently about some of the cool features that are going to be in Silverlight 2.0.

When looking at Silverlight 2.0, Scott Guthrie, VP at Microsoft, showed off some new items. Scott talked about expanding the Media experience with Adaptive Streaming, which will look at several items to figure out which bit rate to use for streaming videos. Jon Harris from Microsoft talked about how to easily use Silverlight to create ads, not something I absolutely love but oh well. Jon also used Expression Blend to finish up the design of the ad and how to use their AdManager to handle tracking the ad. A gentleman from Doubleclick advertising also talking about how they have worked to get a nice platform for using their ads with Silverlight. There were also some very nice demos from the NBC Olympics team showing their web video experience. In the mobile space we find Silverlight is jumping in head first with partnership with Nokia. Finally a couple nice items Scott talked about - that they are open sourcing the code for their controls and also a unit testing framework, both very cool for developers.

Now the important information - where you can get the items that were announced today.

Now I hope everyone checks this out the new Betas from Microsoft. Let us know what you all think about it. Also check http://memorabilia.hardrock.com/ with integrated deep zoom technology. Look forward to tutorials based around this new technology.
